The 17th annual Congress on Dance Research is jointly
organized by IOFA Greece and the
International Dance Council
CID-UNESCO, in collaboration with the Municipality of Naxos
and the national Greek Dances Theatre "Dora Stratou". It is
under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of
Education and the Ministry of the Aegean. The Greek Minister of
Education has accepted to open the Congress. This is the major
event in dance scholarship world-wide. To this date, more than
400 specialists from 40 countries have already registered.
All forms of dance are represented. There are no invited
speakers or observers.

The program includes:
- Presentation and discussion of original research reports.
- Lecture-demonstrations, classes, video and film
projections, discussions.
- Performances by selected dance companies.
- Groups of villagers executing their own dances.
- Teaching of dances encountered during field research.
- Visits to places of special interest, such as dance
schools, museums, ensembles etc.
- Evenings where congress participants dance with music by
local musicians.
- Exhibitions and sales of books, records, pictures,
costumes, accessories etc.

This congress is intended primarily for professionals and
is at the same time a participatory event. The environment in
which the congress is held facilitates informal discussions
and individual initiative. Working languages are English and
Greek. Organization is strictly non-profit - none of the
organizers receives a fee.

Those interested in participating are invited to send a
message to the secretariat. Research reports, as well as
proposals for lectures, exhibitions or performances must be
sent before 15 September 2003 for reviewing by the Scientific
Committee.

Information for Congress participants
Presenting a report, a lecture-demonstration or a
publication is optional.
RESEARCH REPORTS
If you want to submit a report, you must send the complete
text (by diskette or email, as well as in printed form) before
15 September 2003 to be reviewed and printed in the
proceedings. All approved reports will be included in the
proceedings, which are published as a book before the Congress
and will be available to participants free of charge. Papers
must be up to 5,000 words, including: title, name of author,
text divided into numbered sections: abstract, introduction,
sub-sections, notes, references, short presentation of the
author. Save your text as "Plain text format"; for symbols
other than the alphabet, pictures or tables please consult us.
Each author is allowed 20 minutes for brief oral comments (not
reading the printed text), including time for questions by the
audience.
Research papers submitted may have as topics:
- Research conducted according to scientific methodology
(ethnographic, sociological, historical, pedagogical,
psychological, medical etc.)
- Presentation of unpublished information on dance as
related to other topics such as music, costume, theater etc.
- Organizational, artistic, social, scientific,
educational, economic and other approaches based on documented
proposals.
- The dilemma: Fidelity to historical truth or novelty?
LECTURE-DEMONSTRATIONS
A lecture-demonstration can include film, video or slides
projection, with or without oral commentary by the presenter.
Presenters use the language of their choice, without
translation. Time allowed is also 20 minutes. Please submit
details: title, short accompanying text, duration, name and
address of presenter, equipment required.
CLASSES
For a physical demonstration of a dance or a teaching
technique, time allowed usually is 20 minutes.
PERFORMANCES
Individuals or companies can ask for performance time (20
minutes) before the deadline.
EXHIBITIONS
Publications, productions and other material can be
exhibited or sold. The organizers assist exhibitors but do not
assume responsibility. Please specify minimum wall and floor
space required.
TRAVEL
We advise you to book a flight to Athens on Tuesday 21
October. Hotel accommodation can be arranged by the official
travel agency at reduced prices. Please call the secretariat
as soon as you arrive in Athens to arrange registration and
obtain your folder with detailed information. Departure for
Naxos on Wednesday morning, return to Athens on Sunday 26
September.
SCHEDULE
Presentation of reports, lecture-demonstrations,
exhibitions and video projections take place at 9.30-15.30
hours. Dance performances or classes take place every evening
at 20.30-23.00 hours, then participants usually dance with
live music.
REGISTRATION
Entrance to the Congress is allowed only to registered
participants wearing their badge. Upon check-in, participants
receive their badge, a folder containing the detailed program,
the printed volume of the proceedings and other information
material. Payment of CID annual membership fee (55 euros) and
Congress participation fee (60 euros, students 30 euros) can
be made by check or bank transfer. No other fee is charged.
Hotel accomodation (bed & breakfast) is approximately 15 euros
a day (in double-bed room) or 20 euros (single-bed room).
LOCATION
The Congress takes place in a different location every
year. Naxos is famous for its varied history and natural
beauties. You can prolong your stay to visit the sites and
beaches of the largest of the Cyclades Islands. From Athens,
there are several boats and flights a day.

Registration procedure
17th World Congress on Dance Research, Naxos, Greece
The steps are as follows:
1. You send your professional profile, describing in detail
your activities in dance.
2. If it is approved, you send your CID membership fee (55
euros for individuals).
3. You receive a letter from the CID President stating that
you are a member for 2003. We also send a variety of printed
matter.
4. If you want to take part in the annual congress, you
send congress registration fee (60 euros) plus hotel booking
advance (15 euros).
5. You receive a letter from the President of the CID,
confirming that you are a fully registered congress
participant. With this letter you can apply for financial
assistance to public authorities or to sponsors, and to obtain
a visa.
6. Make sure that you have fully registered before you send
a contribution (research report, presentation, class,
lecture-demonstration, performance) to be included in the
congress programme.
Annual membership fee
Individuals: 55 euros
Organizations, schools, ensembles, festivals etc. 110 euros
Congress participation fee
Per person attending: 60 euros

5. From Athens to Pireaus Metro ticket is 2 euros; taxi

6. Hotels in Naxos All hotels are a few minutes from the
congress venue. Average prices: 20 euros single room, 15 euros
for double occupancy, breakfast included.
7. Restaurants All restaurants are a few minutes from the
congress venue. Average cost of lunch is 10 euros when
ordering menu beforehand through the travel agency.
CONGRESS SCHEDULE
Wednesday 22 October: Starting from the Town Hall of Naxos
at 18.30 hours, we will walk in procession to the Municipal
Theater, where the official opening will take place. Gala or
folk costume.
Thursday, Friday and Saturday: 10.00 to 15.00 hours, and
20.00 to 24.00 hours.
Sunday 26 October: 11.00 to 15.00 hours.
Venues: Municipal Theatre in the Town Hall (mornings) and
Closed Sports Center (evenings), port of Naxos.
FEES
CID membership fee is 55 Euros, Congress registration is 60
Euros
prepaid, non refundable. Registered participants have free
access to all events and receive an identification badge, the
congress programme and a folder with plans, information and
other printed material; also, a complimentary volume of the
proceedings (extra copies at 12 euros each). There are no
invited speakers or observers.
COSTUME
Bring a folk costume of your country to wear at the opening
ceremony on Wednesday evening. Wear your identification and
CID badge at all times. Expected temperature is 16 degrees
centigrade, with short rains sometimes. Bring your bathing
suit, the beach is 10 minutes away.
INSURANCE
Make sure your personal insurance covers you for the trip
(for countries outside the European Union). Medical doctors
will be at hand for conferees, as well as a first-aid unit.
TELEPHONE
Phone cards cost 3 euros; there are booths everywhere. For
another country dial 00. From abroad dial 30 for Greece. All
phone numbers in Greece have 10 digits.
NETWORKING
It is important for every conferee to become acquainted
with other members of the great family of CID. Wear your CID
badge and congress identification at all times. Post
announcements on the wall; expose articles or publications,
distribute photocopies or brochures.
Bring many visiting cards to give away. We expect 400 dance
specialists from 45 countries and we would like you to meet
each one of them ! |
